Keyboarding
At Swasey, we teach "touch typing", typing without looking at the keyboard. Touch typing assigns a specific finger to each key and allows typists to increase their speed and accuracy as they progress. In second grade, we begin learning which fingers to use for each key (using KidKeys). In third grade, we introduce UltraKey -- a computer-based typing program that uses graphic animation to show users how to type. It is used at the Cooperative Middle School and was introduced at Swasey in 2003-04. It is a self paced program with lessons and skill checks. Swasey use it with a keyboard cover to develop touch typing speed skills. We have set the skill check passing levels for speed and accuracy high -- not to frustrate students, but to ensure that practice and mastery are in place before advancing to the next step.
